Plantations are farms primarily used to cultivate cash crops for commercial purposes. Unlike other kinds of farming, plantations usually comprise single crops. Since such farms are run to reap profits through commercial sales, farmers require large amounts of land, modern farming tools, and general skills. While various kinds of crops are cash crops, the crop chosen for plantation farming depends on the location of the land, the climate, and the capital available to the farmer.
To successfully practice plantation farming, farmers must obtain and maintain large swathes of land and responsibly handle substantial capital. Although plantation farming has gained popularity in India, various farmers are unaware of how they can optimise their crop yield. Arecanut is one of the most important plantation crops in India. The end-product of the crop is a fruit known as betel nut or ‘supari’, which is sold commercially. It is consumed as a raw and ripe nut, expanding its market. Betel nuts are the primary ingredient in items like ‘gutka’ and ‘pan masala’ and hence can contribute to an increase in farmers’ incomes.
The crop should ideally be grown at an altitude of 1000 m from mean sea level. States that are suitable for growing areca nut are Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Assam. As of now, the total area under areca nut cultivation is 7.31 lakh ha. The land produces around 13.52 lakh tonnes with a productivity of 1849 kg per hectare.
India is the second-largest producer of tea in the world. It is also among the top-most tea-consuming countries. Around 80% of the tea produced in India is consumed by the domestic population itself. States like West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh, and so on, are popular for tea plantations. Overall, a total of 6.37 lakh hectares of area was cultivated with tea crops in the year 2021-2022. The production of tea also reached around 1134.4 million kgs. In the year 2022, exports from Indian tea amounted to Rs 6235 million
Coffee is another popular plantation crop, and farmers primarily cultivate it for its seeds, commonly known as coffee beans. The seeds of a coffee plant are roasted, ground, and brewed to prepare the world-famous beverage coffee. Farmers usually cultivate coffee crops in regions at an altitude of at least 500-1000 m from mean sea level. States known to cultivate coffee are Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka. Currently, the total area under coffee cultivation is 4.65 lakh ha, wherein farmers use 2.37 lakh ha to cultivate Arabica and 2.28 ha for Robusta. The production of the land amounts to 3.49 lakh tonnes, with Arabica cultivations contributing around 0/99 lakh tonnes and Robusta 2.5 lakh tonnes. The productivity of the land is 480 kg per hectare for Arabica and 1090kg per hectare for Robusta.
