Vegetables are a rich source of dietary fibers, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, phytochemicals and are important for food and nutritional security of the country. India is the second largest producer of vegetables in the world (ranks next to China) and accounts for about 15% of the world’s production of vegetables. Presently, India produces about 163.38 million metric tonnes of vegetables from an area of 9.35 million hectares with an average productivity of 17 Mt/Ha. Though the vegetable requirement is 300g/day/person as recommended by dietician, we are able to meet only around 1/9th of that requirement.
Veget
We work hard to help fruit and vegetable growers because a reliable supply of their nutritious produce improves people’s health. Time and again, researchers have proven that fruit and vegetables are rich sources of vitamins, minerals and phyto-nutrients which help prevent malnutrition and health problems.

Problems faced by farmers

The vegetables farmers face many challenges which include selecting the right variety of seeds for vegetable crops like tomato, cole crops, hot peppers, cucumbers, okra, etc. and protection from weeds, viruses, diseases and insect pests. The crop losses in the country due to various pests range from 10 to 30 percent. Damping off, late blight, early blight, leaf spot (Anthracnose, Septorial), powdery mildew and fruit rot are the major diseases affecting vegetable crops while thrips, white fly, aphids, jassids, mites and caterpillar are the major pests. Besides these, bacterial diseases also affect the vegetable crop.
